A medical hub on your doorstep

Health care is The Woodlands' largest employer, and residents rarely need to drive into the Texas Medical Center for specialty care. Five major hospital systems have campuses here, plus MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Everyday care

  • Emergencies: Memorial Hermann The Woodlands is a Level II trauma center. Texas Children's The Woodlands has a dedicated pediatric emergency center.
  • Urgent care and primary care: each major hospital system runs clinics and urgent-care centers across the villages, so most residents have options within a few minutes' drive.
  • Pediatrics: Texas Children's Hospital The Woodlands offers inpatient, outpatient and specialty pediatric care, plus a Level IV NICU.
  • Cancer care: MD Anderson Cancer Center has a location in The Woodlands.
  • Finding a doctor: ask your insurer for in-network providers near your village, then check each hospital system's "find a doctor" tool.

Senior living

The Woodlands has independent-living, assisted-living and memory-care communities, especially in College Park, plus active-adult (55+) neighborhoods such as Del Webb The Woodlands nearby. Seniors also benefit from extra property-tax exemptions (see Taxes & Cost of Living).

Where people work

The Woodlands was designed so residents could work close to home, and many do. Major non-retail employers with 100 or more workers account for roughly 40,000 jobs in the area. Health care leads, at about a third of that workforce, followed by education (Conroe ISD is the single largest employer) and energy.

  • Health care: Memorial Hermann, Houston Methodist, St. Luke's Health and Texas Children's are among the area's largest employers.
  • Education: Conroe ISD and Lone Star College.
  • Energy and corporate: offices for companies such as Chevron Phillips Chemical, Woodforest National Bank, Huntsman and Entergy, plus ExxonMobil's 385-acre campus just south in Springwoods Village.

Local economic developers describe 2026 as a pause after years of growth, with health care expected to keep expanding.

Working remotely

Many residents work from home part of the week. Town Center has coworking and executive-suite options, and the libraries offer free Wi-Fi and study rooms. Internet speed varies by provider and street, so check availability for a specific address before you buy.
