Getting around The Woodlands

The Woodlands sits on the west side of I-45, about 27 miles north of downtown Houston. Most commuters choose among three highways, or leave the driving to the park-and-ride bus.

Three ways south

RouteBest forNotes
I-45Downtown, Spring, ConroeNo tolls; heaviest traffic at rush hour
Hardy Toll RoadDowntown and Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)Often the faster, more predictable drive south
Grand Parkway (SH 99)Katy, Energy Corridor, northwest and east suburbsToll loop that especially helps the south side of The Woodlands

For toll roads, get an EZ TAG (Harris County) or TxTag. Typical drive times to downtown run 35–45 minutes off-peak and 45–60 minutes or more at rush hour. Bush Intercontinental is usually 20–30 minutes.

The Woodlands Express (park-and-ride)

The Township runs its own commuter buses, Monday through Friday except holidays, from three lots:

  • Research Forest Park & Ride: 3900 Marsico Place
  • Sterling Ridge Park & Ride: 8001 McBeth Way
  • Sawdust Park & Ride: 701 Westridge Road

Buses run to Downtown Houston, the Texas Medical Center, Greenway Plaza and the Energy Corridor. Parking is free. A round trip is $17 as of April 1, 2026, and tickets are sold at the lots or on the WE TIX mobile app. Lots close at 9 p.m. and aren't staffed on weekends. During rodeo season, the Rodeo Express runs from The Woodlands to NRG Stadium at the regular fare.

Getting around town

  • Town Center Trolley: free, seven days a week. It links The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, Hughes Landing, Waterway Square and The Pavilion.
  • Pathways: 220 miles of hike-and-bike trails connect neighborhoods, schools and village centers. Motorized e-bikes and scooters aren't permitted on Township pathways.
  • On the water: kayaks, paddleboards and swan boats rent from the Riva Row and Lakes Edge boat houses.

Airports

  • George Bush Intercontinental (IAH): the closer airport, roughly 20–30 minutes via the Hardy Toll Road.
  • William P. Hobby (HOU): southeast Houston, usually under an hour's drive.
