Fun facts about The Woodlands

From lumber-company land to a 120,000-person community in the pines, here's what surprises most newcomers.

  1. It started with a lumber company. In 1964, George Mitchell bought 2,800 acres from the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Co. It took about 300 more land deals to assemble the rest.
  2. The founder changed the energy world. George Mitchell is known as the father of fracking for pioneering the technique to pull natural gas from shale.
  3. Grand opening day was Oct. 19, 1974. A flag was raised, and Cynthia Woods Mitchell cut the ribbon.
  4. One school, one village, one hotel. That's all The Woodlands had at the start. The hotel, The Woodlands Inn, is today's Woodlands Resort.
  5. Frank Sinatra opened The Pavilion. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion debuted in 1990 with a Sinatra concert, a dream of the founder's wife.
  6. Every village name has a story. Cochran's Crossing honors the lumber company's Cochran family. Indian Springs is named for Native American artifacts found on the land. Alden Bridge is a former developer president's Louisiana hometown. Sterling Ridge opened in 1999 for the community's 25th, or "sterling," anniversary.
  7. Lake Woodlands is man-made. It was dug out in the mid-1980s and covers about 200 acres.
  8. Mitchell planned for jobs, not just homes. His goal was 1.5 jobs for every household, so people could work where they live.
  9. No garage sales. The community covenants don't allow them.
  10. There's a bus to the rodeo. The Rodeo Express runs from The Woodlands to NRG Stadium during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
  11. Santa arrives by sleigh on The Waterway. It's the high point of the Lighting of the Doves, a holiday tradition for more than four decades.
  12. Your mail may say Spring or Conroe. Many Woodlands addresses use those cities' names because the ZIP codes came first.
  13. It's an IRONMAN town. The Woodlands has hosted the IRONMAN Texas North American Championship since 2011, with the swim in Lake Woodlands.
  14. Residents chose to stay a township. In 2021, voters rejected becoming a city by a wide margin.
  15. Houston can never annex it. A 2026 agreement permanently took annexation off the table.
  16. A 50th-birthday sculpture. "First Fifty," a $1.2 million public artwork marking the 50th anniversary, stands at Woodlands Parkway and Grogan's Mill Road.
  17. Almost half as many trail miles as road miles. The Woodlands has 220 miles of pathways and 493 miles of roads.
  18. The founder's name is on the highway. Part of Texas 242 is designated the George P. Mitchell Memorial Highway.
